Explaining acoustical concepts like STC ratings and transmission loss curves can be a challenge. When discussing a complex issue such as sound isolation with a Client such as a building owner, musician, or architect, we have found that it can be useful to listen to a simulation of the question at hand – how much will I hear coming through the wall after the changes are made?
Recently we have been working on making carefully calibrated recordings to help with this situation. In this case, we recorded speech samples on both sides of a wall to help diagnose a residential sound isolation issue. By incorporating listening into the design and decision-making process, we can better serve our Clients’ needs and provide helpful context for difficult design decisions.
